Lousy HR
Posted by Jonathan Ng | Filed under Personal
This afternoon, a rep from Motorola gave me a call. Just said a few words to me and said “we have a interview session at Mandarin Oriental Hotel on 2 Feb, can you come?”. Nothing really occurred to me at that moment (yet), so I just requested the lady to send me some details via email.
So I got home, and this is the mail I got:

Leadership and Talent Supply
Motorola
“Finding the Best Talent…”
Holy crap! You think I’m so friggin’ desperate for a job?! Dude, you think you’re Google? Question: what’s the latest craze in mobile phones? I’m sure you’ve heard of the iPhone?
Note the link the rep provided: a link to www.motorola.com. That’s not even a local site!
The thing I hate about this “event” is that it feels so bonding. It’s an interview session! I mean, I don’t go to interviews all over town, then see where I’m selected before making a decision. That’s just not the right thing to do. I’d consider attending any session where you talk about your company and potential career paths at your company. That’s what Swisslog did at my college.
Also, you’re looking for someone who’s serious about a career at Motorola. I believe you’re not looking for salespersons, are you? I doubt lucky draws are a way to attract the serious crowd. The lucky draw sounds.. so chessy..
Jeez, you just can’t call up people thinking that they’d die for a job at your company. I did receive some calls from potential employers, and sadly, the call from Motorola’s the worst. “Finding the Best Talent…” wor, here’s a required reading by Joel Spolsky.
Note: I’m not saying that I’m some super talent of some sort. But, you can’t just call up people expecting them do be jumping up and down coz you called right? One important thing I learned from Vico (my ex-”boss”): the pitch.
