Facts of Life

Some things in life, weather you like it or not, are simply facts. It’s probably stress that lead me to dislike social gatherings. You see, my office culture emphasizes social gatherings. If you don’t turn up, they’ll have all kind of thoughts like “that guy doesn’t like us”, “he say busy, but probably sleeping at home, so fake“, and “jeez, that guy isn’t sociable”. For a moment, I hated that kind of thinking, that one cannot choose the relax alone at home. I also didn’t like the fact that my colleagues didn’t understand that we also have a lot of other commitments besides work - final year project, research seminar, Microsoft events etc.
But today, my uncle reminded me the true purpose of industrial training. No, it’s not what technology or tools you learn. It’s about communication skills, management (managing and being managed), and social skills. Come to think of it, not many can walk into a room fool of people, and make a lasting impression on each and every one in the room. Yes, sometimes I would rather stay at home and watch some tv to relax. I mean, there’s nothing more “fake” than a bunch of people pretending to like each.
Sigh, but what to do.. socializing is a fact of life. Being “fake” is a fact of life.
