Vista RC2 - My Unbiased Opinion

Alright, I’m not gonna bore you by introducing Vista. I’m sure all of you already know what Vista is, else go see Paul’s ultra lenghty review. I’ll go straight to the gist of my Vista experience.

Installation

Installation is really a breeze. Unlike XP where you’re prompted for language, date, timezone stuff in the middle of installation, when Vista does show that prompt, installation is already complete. One thing I didn’t like is that it “benchmarks” the computer for the Windows Performance Index. Pretty redundant in my opinion - can’t it just run in the background when the computer’s idle? Evolving…

Ladies and gentlemen, Jnls.Net is evolving.

When I started this blog, I blogged mainly about web design and stuff: CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, PHP and some Apache too. Then as time passed, my focus shifted towards programming, algorithms and stuff like that. Now, it (or rather, my life) is moving to another phase.

Soon, Jnls.Net will be about life as a Microsoft Student Partner, about my finaly year project, about work life (industrial training at HSBC, and I even forgot to blog about that) and about WPF: Windows Presenation Foundation.

To mark this new phase (of life), I’ll be updating the theme with some changes (hint: a dark theme). An entire re-design is a very, very tedious process.

It’s 22 days into 2007, so I guess it’s too late to make new year resolutions. So I’ll make this a “new phase resolution”, which is to blog more often. There’s many times where I want to blog about something, but just feel lazy to slowly type it out. Hopefully, with more practice, my writting/composition skills will get better and more smooth.

For that few fella’s who subsrive to my feed, thanks. Stay tuned: Jnls.Net is evolving. I’m evolving.

Waiting for Vista

You see, there are a number of ways for me to get hold of Vista. No, I’m not talking ’bout downloading it through BitTorrent, I’m going legit ;-)

  • Dell free upgrade offer. My laptop comes with XP Media Center Edition. This entitles me to a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium. There’s a catch though: RM 95 delivery fee.
  • Microsoft Academic Alliance. Get a copy from college!
  • MSDN Premium Subscription. My “boss” says MSPs will get MSDN premium subscription. But, he added that MSPs throughout the world have yet to receive it.

I’ll probably try to get my copy through college, but I’m not sure if I have to haul my laptop there for installation. Not that it’s a hell lot of trouble, but I’d have to sit there and wait. I’ll also be buying taking Dell’s free upgrade offer. Heck, it’s just RM 95!

Point is, I can’t get Vista now! Arghh.. what a pain.. to complicate things, I’m going back Ipoh on Feb 12, so I have to get Vista and whatever other apps installed before I go home.. sigh, hope I can get my hands on Vista soon..

Office 2008 (for Mac)

Wait, did you even know Microsoft develops Office for Mac too? I have to tell you, apps on Mac always look nicer, especially Office 2004. Even though Office 2008 looks damn sexy, but I find the menus on top a little, er.. cluttered? The ribbon in Office 2007 is great, but why suddenly when convert to Mac, look so weird wan?

There’s also this new My Day application, which is like a PDA/dashboard that shows you the next few tasks in Entourage (screenshot).

First Taste as MSP

Yeah, we’re having our first taste being Microsoft Studnet Partners. How’s it? I havn’t beeng studying at all for the past 3 days. I managed to squeeze some time do some assignment, but most of time, I’m in discussion with Huey Chen and Kok Chiann. We’re targeting TWO activities in March, imagine all the prepration we need to do now.. my exams also starts on the 25th, less than 2 weeks away.. argh!! Really need to make the most out of every minute I have..
