Enumerations
Posted by Jonathan Ng | Filed under Technical
This is the first of a series of posts about C#. Since I can’t really think of tiny apps to put stuff that I’ve learned to practice, the least I can do is blog about it, hopefully to boost my memory on it. So let’s get on with it..
In short, an enumeration is a user-defined interger type. Let’s say you want to define the colors of a traffic light. Defining them with strings has it’s associated overheads. The most memory-efficient way is to use integers to represent the colors: say, 1 for red, 2 for yellow, 3 for green. Problem is, the numbes 1, 2 and 3 aren’t really self-explaining. One might mistake 3 for red for example. The next best way is to use some constants: Read the rest of this entry »

Life, in the Past Few Days
Posted by Jonathan Ng | Filed under Personal
It’s certainly been quite a long time since I’ve last blogged. It’s just that, don’t have much to blog about. I don’t like
blogging ’bout travellings either. I find it especially lame when you don’t have any pictures to show. Haha..
When I was still at KL, I went Sungai Gabai with some friends and s00kwei. In order to go all the way upstream, we had to climb a flight of stairs that I swear is nearly half as long as those at Batu Caves. The best part was still sliding down the rocks. Some were very slippery so you could just bump your ass all the way down. I even tried sliding down “superman style” ;-) Didn’t spend much time in the water though, it was soo freakin’ cold..
Came back at Ipoh with my cousin (by car), so I could bring my dear computer back with me. hehe.. Spent most of the time shopping for groceries with mom, getting a wheelchair for grandma and watching hongkie drama (better than CSI I would say, :p).
Wednesdays are great, movies are just RM5 :p, and I’m so thankful for that. Miami Vice was so boring. It’s lame-ness can be attributed to our Malaysian censors too. Everything’s cut to the point where, you might as well not watch the movie. Too bad that Jackie Chan movie not out yet. Hehe, that guy never seems to retire.
I didn’t make the kinda progress I hoped for on C#. I doubt I’ll get much practice on some of the stuff I’ve picked up over the last few days, so I’m planning on summarizing those stuff here and later on, developing a Minesweeper clone. Minesweeper does look awfully simple on the surface, but it’ll be my first attempt at a Windows Forms app.
Ok, I’ve done crapping. See? That’s why I don’t blog lots about daily life. I have no idea how to make travels sound interesting. Perhaps I should read more…

Focus Shift
Posted by Jonathan Ng | Filed under Personal
Y’know, throughout the last couple of years, my interests lie mainly in web design and development. I spent most of my free time fiddling with XHTML/CSS, JavaScript, PHP and later on AJAX. I have to say, I have yet to master any of those technologies. Now thanks to Microsoft for organizing Imagine Cup, my focus is shifting to Windows programming.
I took yesterday off to spend time with s00kwei, going to Sungai Gabai waterfall together with some friends. We watched “Little Man” too on Wed, which was pretty funny. But now, I’ve got to start reading up on C# and later on, design patterns.
My blog needs some touch up too. I added a little “Hire Me” section to the about page, later I’ll need to complete the projects section. As for the asides posts that I mentioned previously, I guess I’ll have to ditch that idea. Doing the asides section requires some redesign to the blog template. It’ll probably need to expand sideways, which is easier said than done. So what the heck, forget ’bout it.
I’m heading back Ipoh either tommorrow or on Sunday, depending when my mom wants to pick me up. Either way, I won’t have time to go Low Yat to buy a DVD burner, since s00kwei has stupid MYOB lessons. Sigh, I just hope the next 3 weeks will be well spent. Hopefully, I could post my progress on C# here soon. Also, I do intend to create some nice, web2-ish diagrams of design patterns ;-)

Hols Just Round the Corner, w00t!

It’s Monday morning now. I’ve got “Digital Multimedia” paper later on in the afternoon. Then I can focus entirely on networking on Wed. After that, it’s finally sem break! Most people will be looking forward for class trips, watching Hongkie drama all day at home or working (it ain’t easy finding 3 week jobs). For me, it’s a time when I can do 100% what I want: programming.
As I’ve said earlier, I’ll be heading back Ipoh this weekend. There, I’ll be stuck with dial-up, but hey, it’s better than nothing right? Thanks Eric again for the USB modem, without that, I’ll have to wait till night time to use my Mom’s company laptop. I have to admit I didn’t do really well for the exams. I mean, I didn’t put in 100% effort. Not really sure why, maybe it’s coz there isn’t the “healthy, friendly competiveness” with Leng Xiang, LoL
While I’m taking my time reading up on design patterns and C#, some will continue their fight, or rather struggle. So all the best to Jinny - you’re already pretty damn good, so worry less ‘k? I know it really sucks when your team members couldn’t care less about assignments, but at the end of the day, you’re the one who learns the most. Like most of my friends say, academic results don’t mean everything. A short interview (by your prospective employer) will reveal much more things ;-)
