Challenge and Surpass Yourself

I’m not gonna tell long-winded stories here, so here’s the deal: how do you differentiate between learning and experiencing? The amount of time I spend on my assignments really got me thinking: what have I learned from them? Do I benefit from them? Well of course there are benefits: I don’t fail my coursework. Haha.. but that aside, I really can’t tell you ’bout anything great I’ve picked up this semester, especially through the previous two assignments: Flash and ASP.Net.

Dictionary.com defines experience as:

The observing, encountering, or undergoing of things generally as they occur in the course of time: to learn from experience; the range of human experience.

Knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone: a man of experience.

Working on my ASP.Net assignment is arguably and experience. But then again, I didn’t learn anything significant from it. Does that really count as an experience? Probably.. but the key here is that nothing much was gained from it. Thanks to my previous PHP adventures, completing the assignment is practically a process of coding out logics that comes to mind in seconds. Read the rest of this entry »

MyUni Library

MyUni Library is my assignment for “Internet Programming” this sem. Done with ASP.Net 2.0, I used considerable amounts of JavaScript to help out with the interface (since I’m familiar with it). Didn’t really explore the capabilities of ASP.Net due to time constraints. And of course, the lecturer didn’t really help.

I don’t have much time to explain the entire thing in detail, but here’s what you should check out:

1) the search function: some string manipulation + sql sub select allow uses to use “-example” to return results without “example”. Try searching for “php”.

2) Book in and book out. I don’t really know how to put this (read: lazy to explain long long). So if you did the assignment, you should know what it’s about..

So head on over here and take it for a spin.

Sample Student usernames: “04WAD00123″, password: “860101787878″. “04WAD12345″, password: “123456122345″. Staffs: “yubin”, pasword: “yubin”. “naresh”, password: “naresh”.

Sample book (ISBNs for book in/out): 12345678, 47586621, 67232525, 764572822. Enjoy!

Will post source files soon! Please be nice and don’t mess up the database. If you want to try out the maintenance, please add, edit then delete.

What a Week..

Man.. what a week it was.. it was really stressful, tough, sleep deprived week.. anyways, I’ve finally got my ASP.Net assignment off my chest and caught up with some sleep.. throughout the week, a lot of thoughts went through my mind..

First.. thing that comes to my mind my friends style of keeping a low profile.. sort of like “pretend pig, eat tiger”.. he sure doesn’t look like a very smart fella in class, but don’t let the looks fool you.. he got a straight 4.0 in Diploma sem 2 while I got a measly 2.8.. the reason behind this is so that he won’t get too much question from friends about assignments and school work.. I totally understand that.. coz like when people know you’re very “geng”, they expect you to help out with their problems.. and it’s hard to refuse a friend’s request for dire help.. he’s really got a point there.. so perhaps I should “pretend pig” more often? haha..

Then there was Denis.. he seems as if always waiting for instructions from me.. not providing anything productive.. I asked him to try using ASP.Net 2.0’s Grid View control.. which looked pretty cool.. but turned out that there were some aspects of it that we couldn’t control, like validation, usage of a textarea instead of textbox.. 30 Minutes of Extra Reading a Day..

C’mon, everyone knows how important reading is. It’s good to have reading habits. How I wish I could find the time to read a few pages from a lovely novel everyday. My bro’s right. In this day and time, everything’s so damn competitive. What differentiates me from the rest? Sigh.. hardly much..

My programming skills aren’t that great y’know.. though the sad fact is I’m already the top 10-20 (rough estimates, looking at my coursemates) in my course. Hey, I’m not trying to be cocky here, but facts are just facts. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons I get lazy at times..

College’s “requirements” doesn’t help much either. Check out my ASP.Net assignment 2, the base requirements are so basic. It’s like a barebones system in beta stage. The problem lies in the assesment criteria: Read the rest of this entry »

Do You Tag Your Files?

No right? But, Vista expects you to do so. James Bannan brought up an interesting topic in his article “Vista: ultimate confusing mess edition“. Explorer in Vista allows users to sort files by metadata. But let’s face the facts, how many of us actually bother to do so? Perhaps Office 2007 will prompt you to tag your Word documents everytime you create them, but what about your existing photos? Most people have tons of them.

The point is that Microsoft seems to have missed a key learning from computer history: end users are not the least bit interested in putting their own metadata into files.

Vista really doesn’t work around the fact that users never add their own metadata. Without some miraculous educational push to encourage users to tag all their files, all of Vista’s ‘innovations’ amount to 10 per cent more than nothing much.

One of the features Vista’s been bragging about is how easy it is users can organize their files. It seems now that that particular feature won’t be a big hit..
