Annual Host Change

Haha.. it seems like I change web hosts every freaking year. So this time, I really hope it’s the last time I do so. I’m now on one of easynet-interactive’s packages. The promotion period during July entitled me to RM 25 off the RM 120 hosting price. 150 MB of space isn’t much to shout about, but hey, I hardly use much space.
All that might change in the coming months, as I plan to upload photos that I post here (in my blog) to this server instead of external services like Flickr. I once thought that it provided unlimited storage for free, but boy was I wrong. I didn’t even realize that the missing ads mean that there’s a catch somewhere: only 200 pictures allowed.
The funny thing is, my previous host sort of, abandoned the business. My hosting there expired around the end of June. Yeah, I got 1 month of free hosting. Haha.. it wasn’t bad either, support was great and it had like 99% uptimes. I would have continued hosting there, but I just have a bad feeling if the host sort of looses interest in the business.
Hosting at easynet feels a little slower. When I downloaded the home directory backup from my previous host, I got a mind blowing 105 kBps top speed, which is just incredible (I’m on 1 Mbps broadband). Perhaps the server was hosted locally. I’m getting speeds < 10 kBps from easynet server now. Although it’s sort of peak hour now and the server being at Dallas, Texas, it doesn’t really explain such a huge difference in the download speeds.
Support isn’t phenomenal either at easynet. Replies were quick prompt, but it doesn’t really help much with my problem. You could also see from the replies that it’s a human being at the other hand: the replies were short and direct. I felt as if he was reluctant in helping me.
The suport and server speed had better improve, or I might be hunting for another host (again).
After uploading my files and restoring the databases, I tried having wordpress installed in an “invisible” subfolder. Meaning, http://jnls.net would map to /public_html/blog/index.php internally. To cut a long story short, I failed to do so. Anyone know how to do that?? I spend hours working with the mod_rewrite rules, and to make things worse, I had troubles re-installing wordpress.
All is well now, and I’m not gonna bother making any adjustments for some time now. So freakin’ many exams and assignments this few weeks.. sigh..
