Need a Feed Reader?

The funny thing with me is that, I discovered the fun of RSS feeds not long ago: when Firefox introduced Live Bookmarks. Not happy with it, I went and tried out some web based readers. To cut a long story short, I settled with Opera’s built in feed reader since it’s so convenient. But soon, the number of feeds I subscribed to kept increasing. I even tried creating my own web-based feed reader, just that time wasn’t on my side..

So just minutes ago, I finally Googled for “feed reader” in search of a better, non-web-based feed reader. First on the list was: “FeedReader“. Being impressed by the screenshots, I downloaded away.

I have to say that I’m really happy with it’s simplicity. Adding and managing feeds was simply a breeze. It’s definitely for those who have are new to rss feeds, as the lack of instructions/tips can make things a little hard for newbies. But for those who’ve been trying out other feed readers before, you’ll feel right at home instantly. In fact, you’ll just love the simplicity.

I won’t be doing dumb shit like uploading screenshots of my own, just head on here to check out screenshots of FeedReader. Oh, and as for memory usage, it uses around 20 MB when in focus, and roughly 4 when minimized.. not too bad eh?

And as for Opera, I tried a Opera 9.1 weekly (build 8505) and damn~ memory usage is at a all time low! Under 30 MB with 6 tabs open.. and it stays that way! See my flickr page for a screenshot. Kudos to the Opera team for such a great product. To support Opera, remember to make as many Google searches from within Opera. That’s Opera’s profit model: they get commisions from Google.

Netvibes, like start.com, aims to give users a web-based, desktop-y feel. Unfortunately, when you’ve got like a dozen feeds, it starts to feel pretty cramped. Plus, I don’t think u can view posts from within Netvibes..

back when I tried google homepage, it was super buggy. can’t even get the basic stuff right. Also, it lacks a modern 3-column layout that I like.. :p

if u r still using firefox… there is a 3panel style feedreader extenstion named newsfox, not bad, but it will be a problem if a site updates its feed too frequent
