Guys, Do You do Household Chores?

If you’re wondering how tidiness and cleanliness has anything to do with doing household chores, here’s my reasoning: if you’re a clean person, you’ll naturally find your dirty/untidy environment hard to “tahan”, so you’d do the chores, no nagging required.

This is one thing I have in mind for quite a long time.. but dunno why I have the sudden urge to blog about now. You see, most of us have the notion that girls (or, the women-folk) do all the household chores like cleaning whereas guys are usually messy and/or dirty.

The weird thing is, I’ve got really mixed experiences since “moving out” of house and staying at college hostel (for 2 years), then sharing a house with some friends. First of all, my dad used to complain how “messy” my room was. All I did was fling some clothes (unfolded) on the bed. I discovered that my hostel roommate was far worse. The entire room was a total riot. Then there’s my great friend, Lau Leng Xiang. Thanks to the superb training his mom gives him, he’s a super tidy and clean person. He even says that his mom would faint if she would to step into his hostel room. Whenever he brings his computer back home (during the semester breaks), he’d have to wipe the computer clean of any dust outside the house before entering. Seriously, he’s really the tidiest and cleanest person I know.

I now share my house with 1 roommate (obviously male), and 5 other girls. Unfortunately, of the 5, only one surpasses my standards of cleanliness. Cleanliness standards don’t just refer to your habits, it’s everything. She’s does most (ok ok, nearly all) of the household chores, and without her, the house will be in a wreck. Thanks so much Kar Wai! Whenever she does cleaning, (and of course if I’m not too tired), I’ll feel “mm hou yi xi” and help her with some simple things, like clearing out the trash (sometimes, =p). The other girls, sigh.. they rarely do their share of household chores as determined by the duty roster. Worse off, some fuckers don’t even bother to cooperate when I’m doing the cleaning. For me, I do most of the sweeping and mopping since I really can’t stand dusty floor.

As for my roommate, he’s something like a workaholic. If he gets into the “spring cleaning” mood, he’d do a great job. Well, he may not be as clean and tidy as Leng Xiang, but at least he meets my standards.. haha.. whenever I do my chores, one of my house mates (girl) will say stuff like “aww, you’re such a great guy”. Maybe she to has the thinking that guys don’t do no cleaning. Sigh.. but sometimes I feel like shouting back at her: “stand there and watch for wat? help me lah! deng~” Speaking of housemates, I also do know of one or two who rarely do their share of chores. Sigh.. wat to do?

So how many of you guys do household chores? Do any of you guys find that you’re cleaner than girls?? hehe.. sure would like to see comments ’bout this..

For me, given I live with one girl in a house, we share the chores, although at times it seems, almost definitely, a bit lopsided. While we alternate cooking and dishwashing between us, there are definitely days where I cook and wash. On the other hand, she spends more time a week mopping than I do. I spend more time cleaning toilets and the bathroom. In fact I find it very, satisfying actually, cleaning a toilet. On a whole, I believe she cleans her room fairly often, while I rarely touch my room. I feel I spend more time worrying and doing something about the cleanliness of every other room but mine. Mainly because I’d rather the others look clean for her, while I don’t really care about my room because, I don’t mind it being a slight, mess.

On a whole, I believe it reads like I’m the messier of the two in my household. Which is probably right. But I still do my household chores. hahaha

haha.. yeah.. it does when the toilet bowl and sink is sparkling white..

“I feel I spend more time worrying and doing something about the cleanliness of every other room but mine.”
weird fella… i keep my room tidy coz my mood would be affected if it’s not.. this rule is especially true when it comes to my table.. a cluttered/messy table makes me feel that my thoughts are in a mess.. makes me less productive.. haha… then again, maybe it’s just excuses I give myself..

Gosh, we have almost the same names! Just add an “Li” in front of your surname “Ng” and it’ll be my name already lol!!

Anyways, I am forced by mommy dearest to wash the dishes every alternate days. Take out the bin on Fridays and bring it back in. And on top of that, vacumm the common area on weekends. Honestly, I never argued with her, I just did it to stop the god-damn nagging!!!!

I’m tidier than my girlfriend and I think about this whole guy/girl taking housewife thing is just the difference in how each person was brought up.

As you know, maids aren’t the most expensive nowadays and the demand is high because both parents are working their butts off to put food and luxury in the life of their children. Parents rarely have time to teach kids properly about tidiness let alone spending time with their kids.

In conclusion, you should ask your girl friends when did they have a maid in their house or if not, find out have their mum/dad been the one acting as housewife.

Seriously, it’s all about upbringing and disciplining. :)
