Guys, Do You do Household Chores?

If you’re wondering how tidiness and cleanliness has anything to do with doing household chores, here’s my reasoning: if you’re a clean person, you’ll naturally find your dirty/untidy environment hard to “tahan”, so you’d do the chores, no nagging required.

This is one thing I have in mind for quite a long time.. but dunno why I have the sudden urge to blog about now. You see, most of us have the notion that girls (or, the women-folk) do all the household chores like cleaning whereas guys are usually messy and/or dirty.

The weird thing is, I’ve got really mixed experiences since “moving out” of house and staying at college hostel (for 2 years), then sharing a house with some friends. First of all, my dad used to complain how “messy” my room was. All I did was fling some clothes (unfolded) on the bed. I discovered that my hostel roommate was far worse. The entire room was a total riot. Then there’s my great friend, Lau Leng Xiang. Thanks to the superb training his mom gives him, he’s a super tidy and clean person. He even says that his mom would faint if she would to step into his hostel room. Whenever he brings his computer back home (during the semester breaks), he’d have to wipe the computer clean of any dust outside the house before entering. Seriously, he’s really the tidiest and cleanest person I know. Read the rest of this entry »

Need a Feed Reader?

The funny thing with me is that, I discovered the fun of RSS feeds not long ago: when Firefox introduced Live Bookmarks. Not happy with it, I went and tried out some web based readers. To cut a long story short, I settled with Opera’s built in feed reader since it’s so convenient. But soon, the number of feeds I subscribed to kept increasing. I even tried creating my own web-based feed reader, just that time wasn’t on my side..

So just minutes ago, I finally Googled for “feed reader” in search of a better, non-web-based feed reader. First on the list was: “FeedReader“. Being impressed by the screenshots, I downloaded away. Read the rest of this entry »

Resource Intensive Apps

I tried using some new applications (new versions) this week. Foobar 2000 version 0.9 and Opera 9 final. Sad to say, my experience with both of them are, far from best. On one hand, I’ve got Foobar, which uses a hell lot of processing power (40-70%), just to play some mp3s. I would say that the problem probably lies in some of the components that I use with Foobar. Funny thing is, I never had such problems with the previous version.

On the other hand, I’ve got Opera 9. As mentioned earlier, it suffers from severe memory leaks when running on my computer. It happens everytime I use Opera. It’s memory usage simply keeps going up. Sigh.. I only manged to find Opera technology preview 2, but none of the betas. Anyone still have the installation file for Opera beta 2?? Read the rest of this entry »

Opera 9 Memory Leaks

UPDATE: Get the latest Opera 9.1 beta weeklies at http://my.opera.com/desktopteam. Memory usage has been at all time lows (20MB)!!

The final version of Opera 9 was released a couple of days back, and being an Opera user since release 7.5, I downloaded and installed it right away.. It was okay for the first day, but things start to go downhill pretty soon.. My computer felt laggy, and I brought up the task manager to see which darned process is taking up the resources. To my surprise, Opera.exe was eating up like 200+ MB of memory!! I never had such problems with the previous version of Opera, okay, maybe once or twice.. but with Opera 9 final, it happens nearly every time I re-launch Opera.

I’m writing this blog post in notepad right now, afraid that Opera’s memory usage would spiral out of control. When I started typing, I hit the close button on Opera.. a couple of minutes later, it’s memory usage is now 370+ MB.. and is showing no signs of terminating.. don’t get me wrong, the “Application” has ended, but the Opera.exe process is still in memory.. 390+ MB now.. time to end the process.. on computers with 256 MB of memory, you’d probably wanna press the restart button..

For now, I think I’ll just try using Firefox 2.0 beta (Bon Echo).. didn’t notice that there was a built in spell checker.. cool!

Burner or UPS?

I’m sorta in a dilemma now.. I’ve got limited cash, so I won’t wanna empty my bank accounts in a day (hey, I’m a poor student okay?).. so I was thinking ’bout what I should buy first: a DVD-Burner, either from BenQ or Sony.. or, a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). Both devices cost me around RM 160.

Currently, I’m leaning towards a UPS, as it seems to rain every other day nowadays and the power might trip.. besides, it sucks when you’re doing some assignment when the power trips.. There’s also another reason: most people staying around my area claims that the quality of electricity here sucks.. sigh.. too bad TNB has monopolized the market.. haha.. a UPS would pretty much solve all those problems..

DVD burner? I’ll only use it to burn downloaded stuff for long-term keeping.. but it also got me thinking: if I’ve got several disks of movies/comedy/English serials, what are the chances that I’ll re-watch them? Pretty low huh? Well, for now, I guess I could shove everything into my spare 40 GB hard disk for now.. even though it’s a 3 year old Maxtor, it seems to be doing just fine..
