Evaluating Website Accessibility

Roger Johansson has posted part 2 of his “Evaluating Website Accessibility” guide, this time, outlining the basic checkpoints in website accessibility. There are 9 checkpoints highlighted by Johansson, and you’d expect the usual stuff like validate XHTML and CSS, no frames and the like. In addition, he explains the reason behind each checkpoint and tool you could use.

One of the checkpoints Johansson presented calls for usage of automated accessiblity tools. I too think that it’s very useful to have a robot go through your codes and telling you any areas that might be an accessibility issue. One of the tools you could use is TAW. It comes in an online form, or you could download the Java based version for offline use. Read the rest of this entry »

Ice Skating is Fun (and Tiring)

The new semester has started and I find my timetable full of programs. Last Monday, I went ice-skating with some friends at Sunway Pyramid, then to Genting on Thursday, and her house for the weekend. Assignments for Info Systems Development were given out and I also had to make some plans for renting thethat wasn’t the hard part. You won’t know how slippery the ice is until you really step on them with the skates.

My first couple of circles around the rink was a nightmare, literraly gripping the sides for dear life. At the end of those couple of circles, my right arm was exhausted. After a break though, a little more practice and I could skate a little better. Thankfully, I learn quicker then s00kwei. She’s there for the thrid time already and yet I could skate faster than her at the end of the day.

Life’s been busy these days, and it’ll only get busier by the day. Makes me wish my blog had a asides section. Haha…

Why the Post Filter Isn’t Ajaxified

Dan Cameron thought that I used Ajax to implement the little post filter on the left. The post filter seperates my technical and personal posts, allowing users to view only those that interest them. Of course, the “all” button would show all posts.

The filters are as simple as links, nothing more, no “cool” Ajax here. The “all” tab links to the homepage, and “tech” and “personal” each links to their respective categories. Categorizing all your posts to “technical” and “personal” might take hell lotta time at first, but I think it’s worth it. Besides, if you use only categories, you could create a page that display only those categories. It’s all really easy, and most importantly, it achieves our goal or sperating geek stuff and personal stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Pan Fried Salmon

Salmon Fillet

Valentine’s day has always been an expensive affair. I know I probably sound like a cheapo but hey, I’m not even working yet. So unless you’re gonna give me some web-design/developement contracts, shut up. So why pay double for some freaking flowers that’ll only last for 2-3 days? It’s just insane..

So.. Our valentine’s day went by, pretty uneventful, nothing out of the ordinary. Why? Girls like surprises for crying out loud! And what they say ’bout them saying “no” but meaning “yes”, is true. Sigh..

I found this really simple recipe for some pan fried fish. My bro asked me to try recipe books at bookshops. I flipped though one and I realized: would you buy a recipe book that teaches you something as simple as pan-frying a fish?! Anyway, here’s what I remember:

Marinade the a fillet of fish (I used salmon) with salt and ground black pepper. Heat a pan, add a 3 tablespoons oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Dredge the salmon with flour and fry it till it’s golden brown. For the sauce: melt 3 tablespoons butter and fry some capers. Squeeze in 1 lemon and serve. Read the rest of this entry »

Ajaxified Search Everything

Wordpress never had a search function that’s worth shouting about. The “stock” search simply searches posts, and leaves pages and comments out in the cold. Seaching blogs with hundreds of posts isn’t easy either. If it’s homepage shows only 5 posts, then you’d have to navigate through pages and pages of search result.

Dan Cameron pulled together some hacks and this plugin to create a wonderful plugin that allows searching of pages and comments. But then again, searching thousands of comments take a little more time, and most comments are are bullshit. Read the rest of this entry »
