Redirections Finally Done
Posted by Jonathan Ng | Filed under Technical
After hours of trial and error (yes, I didn’t say I’m smart), I’ve finally figured out the proper mod_rewrite codes to redirect visitors to my new domain. Here’s the situation: the blog under the beyondsimplicity.net domain was located at http://beyondsimplicity.net/jnls. I’ve also got permalink set up. It goes something like http://beyondsimplicity.net/jnls/%year%/%month%/%post-name%.
And now, I wanted a little change for the new domain: jnls.net. First off, to make the address as short as possible, I wanted the blog to be at http://jnls.net. Yes, the blog’s at the root folder, not under a “jnls” folder. So here goes the .htaccess codes: Read the rest of this entry »
ShortStat Widget

I was surfing around when I stumbled on this, a ShortStat kapsule. However, Kapsule uses the .Net framework, so I was a little worried about the performance. So since I’m already using Konfabulator, a quick search revealed the ShorstStat Widget for Konfabulator.
It’s a simple widget that shows the number of hits and unique visitors as of today, and also your recent referrers. The widget is based on this. To make it work, you’d have to upload a “gateway” file to which the widget will connect to retrieve information. Luke Wertz has written one that queries the database independently, without integrating into WordPress at all. So I just uploaded it to my document root, not worrying about any script dependencies at all. You can even check out the output in xml form generated by the “gateway”.
Oh, and about the screenshot: my visitors are a bunch of lazy asses. They’re obviously still sleeping!
Domain Changing Woes

First of all, my apologies for the long absence. I’ve been all tied up with assignements and such. I just applied for the domain “jnls.net” from my host at RM 35 for a year. Being excited and all, I started out the “domain shifting procedures”. However, things didn’t really go as planned. Read the rest of this entry »
Google What?

Google Analytics, a free Web analytics software was launched about a couple of days ago. As I was already using ShortStat, and my site being ad-free, I naturally didn’t find the need to flocking to it. And I’m sure glad I didn’t.
Google, yes, the company that claims to have super huge, often-envied-at farms of servers, had reliability problems. According to here, numerous parties had trouble logging-in and worse off, wasn’t even getting any stats.
Stephen Bryant have even some additional comment on Gmail, claiming problems receiving mails. Well, I had some similar problems with Yahoo and Gmail once, so it didn’t bother me much.
As for Google Reader, yes, it’s very broken. If you’ve used Gmail before, you’d certainly have quite some expectations of it. Too bad, it doesn’t work at all. I couldn’t even add a single feed to it. The AJAX page would just show “loading…” forever.
Luckily, there weren’t any complaints (as far as i know). Sometimes, I wonder why Google is trying it’s hands at nearly everything. Sure, analysts come up with a whole bunch of predictments. But I sure don’t see it making any headway with such a wide variety of products, from sidebars to IM clients. Heck, with flops like Google Reader and reliability problems with Google Analytics, I sure would think twice before trying any other new product.
Blog Script Roundup

Sitepoint had a little review of the top 3 blog software: MovableType, Wordpress and Textpattern. It’s not a really really extensive review, but it does provide a quick insight into all 3 blog engines.
I won’t be making quotes from or summarizing the review, as it’s not such a long read. However, I would reall like to voice my reasons for choosing WordPress, mainly over Textpattern, and also a factor that many would ignore: performance. Read the rest of this entry »
