Progress: slow

Development progress has been real slow. Most importantly, managed to “optimized” the images a little. Well, it’s not real optimization, just a stupid mistake I made when slicing the images..

The trick with Fireworks
Well, Macromedia Fireworks saves it’s files with the .png extension. However, it is VERY different with the normal PNG files you would encounter. Saving a your work in Fireworks PNG, and exporting your work with the optimization settings, was different, and I forgot about it. The little bullets I used, were saved with Fireworks, resulting in a bullet the size of 30KB. No wonder page loads were so long. Exporting it resulted in a 200 odd bytes .png file. Sigh…

Next thing I did this morning was updating the “Latest Comments” section. Just a simple plug in adapted from some Brian’s Latest Comments. Since it’s something really simple, I’d rather write it myself than go online searching for something like it.

I also added a little “process time, number of queries” at the bottom of the page. My site’s obviously not on a quad-opteron system… And damn, 18 queries just for a blog page… Hope to learn more about Wordpress so I could start hacking it to pieces.

It’s lunch time and I sure won’t want s00kwei waiting for me… gasp! I’m already 15 minutes late..

JNLS.Net, Moving Beyond Simplicity

After days of designing and coding, the 3rd major design for this site is finally deemed fit for beta release. Sticking with the simple, clean layout that I always love, JNLS.Net was born, moving “beyond simplicity”. You’re looking at the base design. Things might change here and there for the next week or so, as I slowly iron out the details. Here’s a quick todo list so you can start guessing how long before this site is fully completed:

  • Of immediate attention: pre-caching images and loading images accross all pages, properly.
  • Images within posts, considering also the placement of captions.
  • “Related Posts” feature
  • Archives section.
  • Cuter forms for comments and
  • Contact me page!
  • Test search function.

Well, that’s about all I could think of for now. After completing the site, I’ll try to find time to write up some articles about the development process, explaining the methods I used to create the navigation links and the “Show Categories” thingy.

If you’re wondering why on earth “JNLS.Net”, the answer is simple: JNLS are simply my initials, and I do plan on moving to the domain www.jnls.net come Decemeber when beyondsimplycity.net expires (and finally, no affiliation whatsoever with God-forsaken hivehosting.net).

Just a few more days..

I feel that I’ve neglected this site, I just found out that there were 3 comments posted, since like, a month ago? God… Anyway, the new designs pretty much done, just working on some of the features/sections. The beta (I’d prefer calling it an Alpha version since it’s not technically completed, Betas are for bug-testing) is gonna be up in a couple of days, and I’ll probably be applying for “jnls.net” come November. Until then (the Alpha upload), happy new semester!
